How to migrate from Hype/Pico to Leaky Paywall

To migrate your current subscribers into Leaky Paywall from Hype (formerly Pico), there are a couple of things to consider:

  • You will be able to match a Leaky Paywall subscription with an existing Hype Stripe subscription for automatic renewals and contact access management.
  • Hype does not allow you to export passwords, so each user will have to set new passwords with the WordPress password reset method.
  • Your existing Stripe subscription products include an application fee that Hype collects. You will need to have Hype remove this application fee in your Stripe account for existing subscribers.
  • New Leaky Paywall subscribers will not have the application fee applied.

To get started, you will want to export a list of all of your users inside of Hype (free and paid). Go to https://dashboard.trypico.com/contacts and export your users.

Next, download your active/trialing subscriptions from Stripe under https://dashboard.stripe.com/subscriptions. Be sure to filter the status to include all subscriptions. You can export canceled/expired subscriptions too.

Next, you will format your export from Hype and Stripe to match the Leaky Paywall Bulk Import CSV.

Import your Hype export to Leaky Paywall first. Then, proceed with importing Stripe subscriptions. Make sure your CSV matches Leaky Paywall's Bulk Import headers exactly or your import may fail.

Once you have imported all of your users/subscribers to Leaky Paywall, it's time to update the Stripe product for each user. Each Stripe product from Hype includes their application fee. We want to remove this and replace with your new Leaky Paywall levels. To do this, you will need to swap out the Stripe product to reflect your new Leaky Paywall products.

Start by selecting a customer and selecting "Update subscription". Next, select "Add product" and select the new Leaky Paywall product. If you do not see it, you may need to trigger the creation of your subscription product by signing up on your site and getting to step 2 on each subscription level. No need to pay! Make sure that you delete the old Hype generated product and turn off the prorate option. You'll repeat this step for each subscription.
